Child Overboard
Barbara LaMorticella

Ten years old, seven hours a day—
using a big screw as a hammer
to beat rocks into dust,
lining for swimming pools of
middle class Zambians.

Seven hours a day earns him
enough for one meal and a
open air cardboard roof.

Child overboard! Whole
continents going down!

What good, what good
imaginative leaping?

This world is a big screw
beating all my sweet words into
rocks and dust.
