The Other Side

Becca Menon

What a merry chase the soul is led:
    Enlightenment is always “by-and-by.”
(It’s “never jam today,” the White Queen said.)
Over there, won’t angels tell the why
Of suffering, and then - why not? - explain
Cosmology and quantum fields, or small
Things, like how pigeons home?  To know these plain
Would take the mind of God.  The work of all
Enlightenment is being part of this.
But now it’s life that holds the “by-and-by.”
Karma pulls the soul from rest and bliss:
Before it loses one, it needs an “I.”
The flesh will help it do the work, it learns.
And so we beg for death and birth by turns.
