The eyes of Ignorance

Shihabuddin Poythumkadavu

    11. THE SENSE
    Leave a lamp kindled,
I am alone in the dark,
an idol capable only of seeing.

    12. IDIOT
    However hard have I tried
    to convince my soul
that I am not the only world,
it still cries fretfully in vain.

    13. EMPTINESS
    In this journey
    I wish I could be
    as unfamiliar as I am
    to the previous
    anonymous traveller.

    14. DEVIL
    The God lamented over
    the solitude of being
    among the devotees.
    Helpless, he created the devil.

    15. LUST
My lust is the incessant cry
    longing to return
to the womb of my mother.

    16. BLINDNESS
    When the evil torments me
    in the dark cell,
    The good who is deaf
waters the flower plants in the yard.

    17. TREACHERY
    Once a devil
    came to me seeking alms.
    I gave him half of
    what god gave me
    in my bowl of stupidity.
    Now I writhe about
    eating the other half
    unaware of its having poisoned.

    18. A DONKEY IN THE STREET
    Banished though repeatedly
    I am back again
in this street like a donkey.

    19. THE QUINTESSENCE
    The unsuitable garments,
    shabby underclothes,
    a broken pair of spectacles.
    I shall continue
    standing naked
    till you come to me.

    20. THE WORKSHOP
    Like the time in a
    blacksmith’s workshop
    I await you.
    None of the tools
    went out from here were
    worthy of my needs.
