Death
Elsa Mathews

Its shadow looms large
in wide open eyes
like the wings of a bat
that steals a sudden flight

like a lizard
that watches the fly
trapped in the spider's design

Like cold wind that cracks
open the window
on a lonely night

Death, it stares
like a sickle ready
to strike the grass
only so that
it may spring anew, alive
