Monument
Melissa Tuckey

Waterfalls flank the freedom wall
eagles carry a wreath
or are they ripping it to shreds

The pavilion blares its trumpets
and we absorb the great emptiness
that becomes a nation
on the eve of its own casualty

I want to build a monument
to the farmer who drove his tractor into the fountain
you say as we walk past
