Diane Gage

    for Haruki Murakami

    halfway around the world
    a girl disappears
the one who used to call you
in the middle of your dreams

    you travel hard
    through hallucinatory airports
    across seas with strange names
    find yourself on the island
    where she was last seen

    the only clues - letters
    in your own handwriting
    written to no-one you know

    you swim, scan the horizon
for the green flash at sunset
try to count up the sum
    of your misunderstandings

    when you close your eyes
    you almost see her
