Dr Deena Padayachee, the
only South African medical doctor to have
won the Olive Schreiner Prize and the Nadine
Gordimer Prize. His short stories have been
anthologized in a host of collections including
Penguin, U. of Cambridge and Reader's Digest
best short stories. Recently he was asked
to make the farewell speech for a caring,
compassionate doctor who was leaving their
Free Clinic. So he read out the following
poem to the large gathering, which included
the Superintendent
